Hi everyone, I was made aware by the University of Aberdeen about Talking mats. The University of Aberdeen have a theology and autism department. Talking mats are aimed at people who have communication difficulties and related conditions. They have just launched Talking mats on spirituality which is aimed at several faiths. They saw that there was a gap with the Talking mats lacking spirituality and they set about to correct this.

This is a recording of the introduction to Talking Mats spirituality. The website has some research that Talking mats has proved as a useful communication aid in different settings.

Exploring Spirituality - Talking Mats

Publications on Communication Disability | Talking Mats

“This resource offers a gentle, yet systematic approach to exploring spirituality for those who may find this a challenge because of cognitive and or expressive difficulties. It was developed in partnership with the University of Aberdeen, Centre for Autism and Theology and involved working in partnership with people from Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Pagan, Christian, and Jewish faiths”

These mats can be conversation starters.. The Talking mats are not available to buy without registering for online training. Spirituality for some people can be difficult to talk about so these communication tools can help to structure that conversation so it can be used as a general conversation starter. They can also encourage people to look at arguments from different viewpoints to and they can provoke varying discussion about your views spiritually. It is a good way of exploring faith to. It also can be useful to for approaching non verbal speakers to communicate with them.

There are other copycat’s out there to.

I suppose some are game like with conversation starters with a picture and words. I got some last Christmas for Saints from Cafod with pictures and words and it was good for discussion and helped to pass time. The times I didn’t feel like talking they proved to be a good communication tool then.
